Every year Tim Atkin MW, one of the world's leading authorities on Chilean wine, issues his in-depth Chile report. The report contains over 800 tasting notes for the best that the country has to offer, and in it Atkin also picks out the winemakers and wines he deems as worthy of special mention.
In his 2021 Chile report just released, his ‘podium’ of top wines includes the Value category. Casillero del Diablo Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 was chosen as Value Red Wine of the Year 2021. Here’s Tim’s full tasting note:
“Given the volumes involved - 27 million bottles according to one estimate - this is a remarkable achievement from Marcelo Papa and his team. If anything, the hotter vintage helped to achieve consistency across such a large blend of Maipo, Maule and Rapel fruit. The Cabernet combines with 15% Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Carignan in a seamless whole, with subtle wood, granular tannins and vibrant cassis and bramble fruit. 2021-25. 90 Points”
